Gandhian Iceberg and the Gift Ecology

The Gandhian Iceberg is a book and a model for those who are committed to "being peace" and co-creating a nonviolent culture where all-life can thrive. It helps give us a narrative, a way to understand what we have been doing in our lives, and what we are doing as a global collective. I have had the great honor to meet inspiring people dedicating their lives to peace. One of them, Pancho Ramos (read his amazing story here) gave me this book a few years back and it has helped me weave all the wondeful pieces I have been learning and practicing like, NVC, permaculture, mindfulness, gift economy, etc.

I want to share my understanding and practice of this simple but profound model composed of three parts: satyagraha (courageous action inspired by love), constructive program (collective practice of living together), and self purification (deep inner work). I'd also like to share my adventures in the world of giftivism (the practice of gift economy) and my deep yearning to align my life to the gift ecology.

Here is an article I wrote on giftivism, a short video about the gift economy, and a wonderful TEDx talk by my friend Nipun Mehta.

Most importantly, I want to hear what all of you are moved by, what challenges you are facing in ilfe, and explore how to be more empowered and joyful on this exciting journey. As my zen master Thich Naht Hanh says, "there is no way to peace, peace is the way." Let's enjoy life and share it with everyone.

Here is a bit about the book from the official website

The Gandhian Iceberg faces the current climate change emergency and the intensification of social crises around the world, and calls for the convergence of a deeply committed, spiritually-rooted contingent of nonviolence activists* ready and willing to offer themselves in service to a social change movement unlike any seen before.
*I removed "US" from nonviolence activists becaseu I find the contents relevant to those who live beyond the boarders of the US, and arguably, we are all heavily impacted by US culture, politics, and economics.

On "integral nonviolence" from the East Point Peace Academy

In common usage, the word nonviolence, which for Gandhi represented the most powerful force available to humankind, has devolved to mean nothing more than the tactical rejection of the use of physical force in conflict situations. For this reason, a growing number of changemakers have begun using the phrase integral nonviolence to denote the integrated, life-encompassing philosophy and practice that Gandhi taught and modeled.

Below is a review written by one of the most inspiring NVC trainer and peace actrivists I know, Miki Kashtan

Chris Moore-Backman has done a job I’ve wanted someone to take on for years. The Gandhian Iceberg grapples in earnest with the legacy of Gandhi’s life and thought to begin to answer the question of our times: is there a nonviolent path to a livable future? Practical and visionary, anyone in whom lives the fire of making the world work for all of life will find companionship, solace, and challenge. ~ Miki Kashtan, author of Reweaving Our Human Fabric: Working Together to Create a Nonviolent Future
